Boxelder Bugs
Boxelder bugs primarily infest the southern and western exposures of structures. Occassionally they may be found on the east and most rarely on the north side of a building. Boxelder bugs are attracted to the heat of the sun and will nest and sunbathe on the structure where they can receive the most warmth.
If we look at the habits of the boxelder bug we may start in the winter. During the winter season boxelder bugs will nest in the wall voids, cracks and crevices, attics and other areas that will provide them shelter. On warm days, particularly when the sun is beating nicely on the building it will draw boxelder bugs from their over-wintering sites. When spring arrives the boxelder bugs literally start coming out of the “woodwork”. They begin to emerge from their over-wintering sites and sunbathe while preparing for their feeding and breeding opportunities. When summer arrives the boxelder bugs move to the ground, primarily feeding on the seed of the female boxelder tree. As fall arrives the boxelder bugs begin moving back to the structures where they intend to overwinter.
Our process of reducing large populations of boxelder bugs is to coat the building with a clear and odorless insecticide that is very effective at eliminating them. Customers can typically expect a 95-99% kill ratio. You will normally realize these results within 72 hours of treatment. We use a vehicle with a tank that can deliver product about 35-40 feet high on the stucture. If we need to treat for boxelder bugs on levels higher than a second story then we will use hand held equipment on balconies or reaching outside of windows.
Boxelder bugs are not known to be a harmful pest. They may bite but this behavior is unusual and rare. The young of the boxelder bugs are bright red in color. Large numbers of boxelder bugs may be found grouped together in mass clusters. Infestations may reach into the tens of thousands in numbers around a single dwelling home. They can become quite a nuissance pest especially around entrances to buildings by flying into a persons hair and face.
Many people are convinced that there is little to nothing that can be done to control boxelder bugs. That statement could not be further from the truth. With Extrol’s procedure we guarantee that clients may expect to receive 95-99% control of the problem. We use a clear and odorless solution that will deliver phenomenal results within 24-48 hours.
